Witches
JYM theatre co. returns from its sold-out season of Cabaret in 2009 to be one of the first Australian companies to present The Witches of Eastwick – 15-29 May at the Phoenix Theatre, Elwood.
Most people will remember the 1987 film which pitted Jack Nicholson against the dynamic trio of Cher, Susan Sarandon & Michelle Pfeiffer. The JYM theatre co. production sees newcomer Adam Kirk take on witches extraordinaire Romi Freedman, Kathryn Sutherland and Hayley Nissen.
Based on John Updike’s famous novel, the story follows the exploits of three women, the witches Alexandra Spofford, Jane Smart, and Sukie Rougemont, who acquire supernatural powers and decide to conjure up the “perfect man”. Cue the arrival of the charming Darryl Van Horne, who throws their world into convulsions. The mysterious Darryl seduces each of the women, encouraging them to expand their powers and creating a scandal in the town. But when things start to get out of control, the witches decide to take matters into their own hands.
Love, revenge, gender politics and history all run their threads through the colourful tapestry of this show, which boasts a musical score of jazzy foot-tapping numbers, ballads with irresistible harmonies and funky ensemble pieces.
